How to make Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla or Opera your default browser

Changed your mind about which browser you want as your default browser -- the browser that opens when you click on HTML files, when you type an URL into the Windows "Start Run" input box, etc.?

During the installation process, both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator browsers will ask whether you want them to be your default browser. Here's how you could change the default browser once a browser is installed on the system:

Internet Explorer 6.x and 5.x:
Select ""Tools Internet Options"" from the main menu in Explorer.
Change to the ""Programs"" tab.
Check the ""Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser"" option.
Click ""OK"".
Close all Explorer windows and restart the system. Once the system comes back up, restart Explorer.
When the ""Would you like to make [Internet Explorer] your default browser?"" prompt appears, click ""Yes"" to make Explorer the default browser.

Mozilla 1.x:
Select ""Edit Preferences"" from the main menu in Mozilla.
Change to the ""Navigator"" tab/section.
Click the ""Set Default Browser"" button.
Click ""OK"".
Close all Mozilla windows (for best results, restart the system). Finally, restart Mozilla.

Mozilla Firefox 1.x:
Select ""Tools Options"" from the main menu in Firefox.
Change to the ""General"" tab/section.
Check the ""Firefox should check to see if it is the default browser when starting"" option.
Click ""OK"".
Close all Firefox windows (for best results, restart the system). Finally, restart Firefox.
When the ""Would you like to make [Firefox] your default browser?"" prompt appears, click ""Yes"" to make Firefox the default browser.

Mozilla Firebird 0.x:
Select ""Tools Options"" from the main menu in Firebird.
Change to the ""General"" tab/section.
Click the ""Set Default Browser"" button.
Click ""OK"".
Close all Firebird windows (for best results, restart the system). Finally, restart Firebird.

Opera 7.x:
Select ""File Preferences"" from the main menu in Opera.
Change to the ""Default Application"" tab.
Check the ""Check if Opera is default browser on startup"" option.
Click ""OK"".
Close all Opera windows (for best results, restart the system). Finally, restart Opera.
When the ""Would you like to use Opera as your default application for viewing web pages?"" prompt appears, click ""Yes"" to make Opera the default browser.

Using Task Scheduler to Open Programs Automatically

If you always open the same program every time you start Windows XP (such as your email application), you can designate that program to open automatically every time Windows starts simply by using Microsoft's Task Scheduler. First, open Task Scheduler by going to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Scheduled Tasks.

Then click the Add Scheduled Task icon. Click the Next button and select the application you want to open. Click Next and then choose When My Computer Starts. Click Next twice, then Finish, and your selected program will load every time you start Windows.

Turning Off the Modem Sound

A reader named Dennis wrote in asking how to mute the sound of his internal modem. The easiest way to do this for all Connections that use the same modem is to pull up its Properties page under Device Manager.

Click Start, and then right click on My Computer and choose Properties. Click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button. When Device Manager appears, find the Modems group and expand the list. Right click on your modem and choose Properties again.

On the Modem tab, you'll see a slider for your modem's sound move it all the way to the left (off) to kill the sound.

Use Hotkeys to Switch Programs

If you routinely use a specific set of programs, you can set up hotkeys that will launch or directly switch among them instead of cycling with Alt-Tab.

Find a desktop or Start menu shortcut that launches a program and select Properties. On the Shortcut tab, click in the Shortcut key box, and press the key combination you want to use.

Be sure to choose key combinations that are not needed by any of your programs; for example, use Alt-Shift-1, Alt-Shift-2.

Speeding Up Your Startup

Whenever you boot your computer, Windows XP may display an options menu allowing you to choose which OS to run. If you don't dual boot your computer into two or more operating systems, you can speed up your computer's startup without any manual intervention.

To disable the 30 second default wait when your computer starts up, right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Settings button in the Startup and Recover section. Uncheck the Time to display list of operating systems check box. Click OK until you get back to the desktop. The next time your computer starts up, you won't have to sit and wait...

Safer Registry Editing

Making changes to your computer with RegEdit can often be tricky. However, if you make use of one or both of these tips, your computer should be pretty much saved in case you make a mistake.

Before running RegEdit and making changes to it by hand, you can create a System Restore Point. To create a System Restore Point, you'll need to get to the System Restore Wizard. To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, and then click Help and Support. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Using System Restore to undo changes, and then click Run the System Restore Wizard.

The next best thing to this is to open RegEdit, navigate to the key you wish to change, right click on it and choose Export. The export process will create a text file with a *.reg extention. Find a suitable folder for the reg file, name it, and then choose save.

If something "bad" happens after you make the changes, you can either use System Restore to restore your computer to a previous point, or simply navigate to the *.reg file you created, double click on it, and the original settings will be imported back into your registry. It will be as if you never made the changes.

RegEdit Safety

It is a good idea to save a Registry key before you make a change to it. To do this, click Start, Run, and type "regedit"

then press Enter. When RegEdit opens, navigate to the key you intend to change and choose Registry, Export Registry File. Give the file a name and click Save. For example, let's say you're about to make a modification to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\CursorBlinkRate

Before you make the change, click the CursorBlinkRate key and choose File, Export. Choose a location and name for the exported registry branch (or choose All, in the Export range area, and get your entire Registry). Click the Save button. Now you can make the changes you need and reimport the old settings if things don't go well.

Clean Up Your Documents

Several subscribers have asked how to manage the Documents list (Start, Documents). One way to manage the list is to get rid of it: Click Start and then choose Settings, Taskbar. When the Taskbar Properties dialog box opens, click Start Menu Programs. Click Clear and then OK to delete the current Documents list.

If you don't use the Documents list at all, or if you don't want the list to carry over from one session to another, you can write a batch file to delete the list contents automatically when you start the computer. This way, you'll have only the documents that you opened during the current session.

Launch Apps Faster

If you are trying to find the right program group for an app you want to run, but can't remember where its at, check this out. You don't need to search through group after group on the Start Menu. All you need to do is type the first couple of characters into the bar at the bottom and the name will appear.

Speed up your hard drive by scheduling defrags

The disk defragmenter in Windows Vista was redesigned. I personally do not like the new stripped down interface but one welcome addition is easy defrag scheduling.

Click on the Start Button and type in Disk Defragmenter and hit Enter

Make sure Run on a schedule is checked as shown above.

Click Modify schedule and configure the settings for your computer use. I like to set mine to Daily and late at night since I normally leave my PC on at night.

Speed up web browsing with Open DNS

When you type in a domain name such as wingeek.com in your browser the computer must resolve the friendly name into an IP address of the server to download the web page and supporting files. Windows uses a DNS (domain name system) server to lookup this information. By default, Windows uses your ISP’s DNS server. Depending on your provider, the performance of their DNS resolving server varies. Some large national providers are known to provide unreliable and slow DNS servers.

The performance of the DNS server you are using is one component that affects the speed of your internet browsing. Since each domain name you type in must be resolved into an IP address, the amount of time that takes will delay the loading of any web page. Some users with overloaded ISP DNS servers can see delays in multiple seconds before web pages start to load.

OpenDNS provides free alternative DNS servers that anyone can use with any internet provider. Unlike many national internet providers, OpenDNS’s DNS servers are very fast and reliable. Using OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP servers will help you speed up your internet browsing by cutting down on the delay between resolving a domain name and getting the IP address so your browser can start loading the web page.

Configuring your computer to use OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP’s is a simple change that works in both Windows XP and Windows Vista:
1. Click on the Start Button and type in ncpa.cpl and hit Enter. In Windows XP Click on the Start Button, click Run and then type in ncpa.cpl
2. Right click on your active network connection that you use to connect to the Internet and select Properties.
3. On the Networking / General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) (version 4 on Windows Vista) and hit Properties.
4. On the properties screen, select Use the following DNS server addresses and then type in 208.67.222.222 in the preferred and 208.67.220.220 in the alternate boxes.

5. Hit OK twice and you are finished.

Visit OpenDNS.com to learn more about some of the advanced features of OpenDNS on top of the speed benefits.

Create a shortcut to switch users

Fast user switching has been a very useful feature of Windows for multi-user computers. Dating back to Windows XP, fast user switching allows multiple users to be logged into a computer at once. This is very useful if a user is in the middle of work but another needs to use the computer shortly. Fast user switching will allow the other user to log in while still retaining the other users session. Once the other user is finished the session can be switched back to the original user.

Creating a shortcut to switch the active user is as easy as creating a shortcut to c:\windows\system32\tsdiscon.exe

  1. Right click where you want the shortcut to be created and select New and then Shortcut.
  2. Copy and paste “c:\windows\system32\tsdiscon.exe” into the location box and hit Next.
  3. Give it a name and hit Finish.

COOL www SEARCH

I have a number of annoying spyware infecting my computer... COOLwwwSEARCH is one, and I'm guessing it's the one causing most of my issues. I can't even get through a decent Spybot run without it blowing up my computer with popups. Anyways, I've tried CWShredder and all that, so now it's time for HIJACK! I've never used it before, but I kinda know what to look for, but I might as well stay on the safe side. Anyways, here's my log:
