Turning Off the Modem Sound

A reader named Dennis wrote in asking how to mute the sound of his internal modem. The easiest way to do this for all Connections that use the same modem is to pull up its Properties page under Device Manager. 

Click Start, and then right click on My Computer and choose Properties. Click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button. When Device Manager appears, find the Modems group and expand the list. Right click on your modem and choose Properties again. 

On the Modem tab, you'll see a slider for your modem's sound move it all the way to the left (off) to kill the sound.
